Close-up of a nativity figure hand-carved in maple wood, with the wood grain visible

At Novu we believe a nativity set is not just another decoration: it is the piece the whole family sets up together every December and that, with luck, will be passed on to the next generation. That is why we do not mass-produce or sell moulded figures. We select nativity sets hand-carved in European artisan workshops with a long woodcarving tradition, and we choose each one for its design, its wood and its finish.

Who we are

Novu was born from the idea of turning the most important scene of Christmas, the traditional nativity, into an elegant, modern piece that takes centre stage in today's homes. We felt that traditional nativity sets did not fit the minimalist, modern decor of today's homes, so we set out to find nativity sets with fine lines, noble materials and warm light.

How our workshops work

Every figure passes through several hands before it reaches your home:

  1. The wood. The figures are carved in sycamore maple, a pale, fine-grained and very stable wood. Before it is worked, it is dried for months so that it does not warp over time.
  2. Roughing out. Starting from a model, each block of wood takes on its basic shape.
  3. Hand finishing. With gouges and knives, the artisan defines the face, the folds of the clothing and the posture. This is the step that makes two identical figures never exactly alike.
  4. The final finish. Natural, with the wood left visible, or hand-painted in oils, figure by figure.

What we look for in every nativity set

  • Modern design, timeless scene. Clean lines that suit today's homes, while keeping the Holy Family, the ox, the donkey, the shepherds and the Three Wise Men.
  • Solid wood. No resin and no plastic made to look like wood.
  • Careful proportions. 10 cm figures designed so the scene looks balanced on a console, a mantel or a sideboard.
  • Light with no visible cables. In the models with light, a low-energy LED built into the stable.
